A Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) is an earned research degree that involves an extended period of intensive, independent research, resulting in a significant contribution of original knowledge in the form of a dissertation, and defense of the work before a panel of experts in the field. The Ph.D. programme prepares graduates in theology to develop servant leadership by imparting advanced knowledge and values for global Christian service to God and humanity.
The aim of the Ph.D. programme is to provide qualified applicants with an opportunity to engage with cutting-edge research in the context of the diverse and wider learning and living community of the university and for active involvement in the Christian ministry of education. The programme is devised with the philosophy ‘To equip for every good work’ ( 2 Timothy 3:7) with proficiency in a specific area of research contributing reminiscently to global Christianity.

An applicant must have the ability to pursue independent research with regular 1:1 supervision and the possibility of a co-supervisor, if need be, with the option of choosing an area of research in any one of the following: Biblical Studies (Old Testament/New Testament)/African- Christian Theology/ Missiology/ Christian Ministry/ Counselling.
The coursework shall consist of four core courses including one on Research Methodology, two electives from the area of specialization, three seminars, and a dissertation. A Ph.D. candidate must obtain a total of 78 credits as described below:
