NURSING DEPARTMENT

The Department of Nursing provides many opportunities for its students to gain valuable, hands-on experience that will ensure they receive a well-rounded education founded both in academic theory and real-world application. It prepares graduates for the practice of professional nursing through rigorous academic and clinical coursework.

MISSION: The Mission of the Department of Nursing is to produce graduates with practical and intellectual skills appropriate to the health needs of the present and future Ghanaian society. It ensures that the students acquire such skills using modalities that encourage the acquisition of learning in the context in which they will later function as health care professionals.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

  • 100 LEVEL ENTERING 1. Holders of SSSCE must obtain Grade A – D in six courses, three elective (any) and three core courses.
    2. Holders of WASSSCE must obtain Grade A1 – C6 in six courses, three elective and three core courses.
  • MATURE APPLICANTS: Applicants must be at least 25years old at the time of the submission of the application. Two categories of mature applicants would be considered:

    • State registered Nurses (SRN) will be entered at level 200*
    • Registered General Nurses will be entered at level 300 after a successful interview.
    • Candidates should have a minimum CGPA of 3.25 or better from accredited institution of Nursing with a pass and in good standing with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana.

NURSING ACCESS COURSE

INTRODUCTION
The access course is designed to replace the West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for candidates who did not meet the requirement to enter the Diploma RGN programme and did auxiliary nursing under the Ministry of Health/Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana and Obtained the Registered Nursing Assistant Clinical (RNAC) or Registered Nursing Assistant Preventive (RNAP) or Health Assistant Clinical (HAC) or Health Assistant Preventive (HAP) or Enrolled Nursing (EN) or Community Health Nursing (CHN).Certificate.
It is also designed to make up for level 100 courses for students who would enter at level 200.

Entry Requirements
Candidates with auxiliary qualification (Certificate) in RNAC, RNAP, HAC, HAP, EN, CHN from Ministry of Health Training Institutions and with a minimum of 3 years of practice, who have credits (at least Grade A1-D7) in WASSCE and (A-E) in SSSCE in English and Core Mathematics, may be considered for admission. Such candidates shall write an entrance examination and attend a selection interview.

Point of Entry
Candidates with auxiliary qualifications who obtain 40 – 59 average marks in the Access Course shall enter the Bachelor of Science in Nursing programme at Level 100.

Candidates with auxiliary qualifications who obtain 60+ average marks in the Access Course shall enter the Bachelor of Science in Nursing programme at Level 200.

Candidates who score less than 40 marks in a course will repeat the course and if they pass, will enter the programme at the point they qualify to enter.

Length of Access Course
The Access course will last for a period of eight (8) weeks. Lectures will be delivered for six (6) weeks and one (1) week will be used for revision and one (1) week for examinations.

OBJECTIVES

  1. Apply knowledge in nursing to provide high-quality nursing care to individuals, families, and communities.
  2. Provide promotive, preventive, and restorative health services in line with national health policies and programmes.
  3. Appraise, critically summarize, and translate current research into evidence-based nursing practice.
  4. Integrate knowledge and skills from nursing science to facilitate clinical decision-making and the delivery of safe and effective nursing care.
