Biomedical Engineering · Class of 2019

Albert Ashong Afotey's journey began at All Nations University, where he earned his Bachelor of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering in 2019. He went on to pursue a Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences Lübeck, Germany. Today, Albert is a PhD Candidate in Biomedical Engineering at McMaster University, Canada, where his research focuses on developing advanced FRET-based biosensors for the early detection of diseases — work aimed at improving diagnostic approaches for better patient care worldwide. Albert's excellence has earned him several honors, including the McMaster University Faculty of Health Sciences Graduate Programs Outstanding Achievement Award, the Canadian Black Scientists Network (CBSN) Excellence in Research and Innovation Award, the CBSN General Trainee Award, and the NSBE Technical Research Exhibition Award. Beyond the lab, he is deeply committed to mentorship and leadership, serving as a Graduate Community Leader at McMaster University, a Mitacs Globalink Research Mentor, and Graduate School Conference Chairperson for the NSBE 2027 Convention Planning Committee — championing diversity and opportunity for students in STEM around the globe. Guided by faith, determination, and hard work, Albert continues to inspire the next generation of scientists while advancing healthcare technologies worldwide.
